DNI Haines Statement on the Passing
of Former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines issued the following statement on the passing of former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter:
“We received the news of Ash Carter’s passing with great sadness. He was an extraordinary man who dedicated so much of his life to service, to promoting science and innovation for the good of the country, and to peace. He was a great friend and partner to the Intelligence Community, and his legacy will live on in our institutions and in the many people he inspired over the years in national security.
Ash had a wonderful intellect and was never afraid to tackle hard challenges. Through his service to more than eleven secretaries of defense in both Democratic and Republican Administrations, Ash indeed shaped our history, pushing us to do better and to think bigger, particularly when it came to innovation and acquisition. More than anything, Ash was a fundamentally decent man, one whose warm smile and dry wit encouraged candid conversation. Whether in academia, on numerous boards, or throughout think tanks and the private sector, Ash brought his best insight to every endeavor.
To his wife, Stephanie, and their children, we offer our condolences and hope that Ash’s legacy of patriotism and service will comfort them today and with the passage of time.”
