The Mission Integration (MI) directorate creates a consistent and holistic view of intelligence from collection to analysis.MI drives integration across the Intelligence Community, informs policymakers and warfighters, and ensures the delivery of timely, objective, accurate, and relevant intelligence. Specifically, the MI directorate leads the National Intelligence Council (NIC) and produces the President’s Daily Brief (PDB).
The National Intelligence Council
Replacing the Office of National Estimates (established in 1950), the NIC has led intelligence analysis across the Intelligence Community (IC) to inform both immediate and long-term policy decisions since 1979. The NIC also drives mission management, integration, and coordination throughout the IC through its regional and functional teams. These subject matter experts support the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and national security decision makers by providing comprehensive oversight that integrates collection, analysis, counterintelligence, and resource programming across their respective areas of responsibility.
The President’s Daily Brief
The President’s Daily Brief (PDB), which has been presented in some form to the president since 1946, is a daily summary of strategic, all-source intelligence and analysis on national security issues produced for the president and key cabinet members and advisers. The PDB is coordinated and delivered by the ODNI, with contributions from all IC elements. Materials are selected for the PDB by the DNI to help the President avoid tactical surprises, manage ongoing crises, and craft policies to advance U.S. strategic interests.

Deputy DNI, Mission Integration (MI)
Dr. Trent Maul is the Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Mission Integration, serving as a principal advisor to the DNI on all issues relating to intelligence collection and analysis, as well as leading key elements of Intelligence Community (IC) integration, notably the President’s Daily Brief and the National Intelligence Council. His wide range of responsibilities also include chairing the IC’s top collection and analysis boards, managing the National Intelligence Priorities Framework process to designate IC priorities, driving the process to determine mission-related IC budget investments, and routinely representing ODNI in Deputies-level NSC policy meetings.
Before arriving at ODNI, Dr. Maul served as the Director for Analysis (DI) for the Defense Intelligence Agency where he was directly responsible for the work of the Agency’s thousands of analysts and managed the entire Department of War’s multi-billion dollar annual budget for intelligence analysis.
Prior to his duties as the DIA DI, Dr. Maul was the Director of DIA’s Middle East/Africa Regional Center, where he led the largest agency mission center on a full spectrum of intelligence capabilities: collection (human and technical), collection management, analysis, and counterintelligence. Dr. Maul was also the Deputy Director for Intelligence to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and key Joint Staff principals at the Pentagon. Before these senior management roles, he held DIA’s most senior analytic positions for both Africa and the Middle East, as well as performed operational tours at both U.S. Africa Command and U.S. European Command.
Dr. Maul previously served as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy, which included positions as an analyst on a multitude of regional and transnational topics, collections management, HUMINT targeting, and was a trained Defense Attaché during his service.
Dr. Maul has received numerous awards from the IC and DoW over his career and is the recipient of the Presidential Rank Award. He received his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science; his M.A. from King’s College, University of London; and his B.A. with highest distinction and departmental honors from the University of Kansas.
Dr. Maul resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Genevieve, their son, Alistair, and the world’s best dog, Buddy.
