Jama‘a al-Islamiyah (JAI), a.k.a. the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood, is a Lebanese Sunni terrorist organization that formed in 1964 to create a more Islamic society in Lebanon and provide support to the Palestinian cause. JAI praised HAMAS’s attack against Israel on 7 October 2023. Its armed wing, al-Fajr Forces, coordinated with HAMAS and Lebanese Hizballah to conduct rocket attacks from southern Lebanon into Israel during the Israel-HAMAS conflict.

Operates primarily in Lebanon; probably has a small presence in Syria

Overall membership unknown; al-Fajr Forces has about 500-1000 members

TACTICS AND TARGETS
In 1982, JAI created al-Fajr Forces to resist the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Al-Fajr Forces also fought against the Israeli military during the Israel-Hizballah conflict in 2006. The unit probably has access to small arms and explosives and has conducted rocket attacks into Israel.

TERRORIST GROUP DESIGNATION
The US State Department designated JAI a foreign terrorist organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group in January 2026.
