Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael K. Atkinson, along with the Inspectors General from the United States Department of Justice, National Reconnaissance Office, and National Security Agency, hosted an information exchange with their Canadian counterparts from the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC). SIRC is an independent Canadian government agency responsible for reviewing the operations of Canada’s security service, the Canadian Intelligence Security Service.

Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael K. Atkinson, along with new Principal Deputy Inspector General Robin Ashton and an office outreach team, recognized National Compliance Officer Day with a workforce outreach event at the Intelligence Community Campus in Bethesda, Maryland (ICC-B). National Compliance Officer Day recognizes the contributions of professionals who not only oversee their organization’s policies, but also respond to allegations of misconduct and evaluate procedures.

Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG) Michael K. Atkinson, along with Office of the Director of National Intelligence senior leaders from IC Equal Employment Opportunity & Diversity, Office of Civil Liberties, Privacy and Transparency, Office of the General Counsel, IC Chief Human Capital Office, Office of the Ombudsman, and Employee Management Relations Office, provided information to and answered questions from the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) workforce about proper reporting channels, complaint processes, and confidentiality matters as part of an oversight and compliance panel discussion coordinated by NCSC leadership.

Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael K. Atkinson and other members of the Office of the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG) engaged the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) workforce during a National Whistleblower Appreciation Day outreach event held at ODNI’s headquarters. The ICIG highlighted the importance of reporting suspected fraud, waste, and abuse and provided insight on various IG programs and services, including the ICIG’s new Center for Protected Disclosures. The group also distributed resource material and promotional items to advise information table visitors how to contact the ICIG Hotline.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats swore in Michael K. Atkinson as Inspector General of the Intelligence Community after the Senate confirmed his nomination the prior week. As Inspector General, Mr. Atkinson oversees a workforce of special agents, auditors, inspectors, attorneys, and support staff whose mission is to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration and implementation of programs and activities within the responsibility and authority of the Director of National Intelligence and to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in such programs and activities. He also serves as the Chair of the Intelligence Community Inspectors General Forum, which consists of the twelve inspectors general with oversight responsibility for elements of the Intelligence Community. The Forum serves as a mechanism for informing its members of the work of individual members of the Forum that may be of common interest and discussing questions that may involve or be of assistance to more than one of its members.

A former Lawrence Livermore Research Scientist was sentenced to 18 months in prison for submitting false data and reports to defraud the U.S. This case was prosecuted by the Special Prosecutions and National Security Unit at the United States Attorney’s Office and the result of an investigation by the Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Energy and the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community.
