A Statement of Condolence From the Center’s Current and Former Directors

on the Passing of Sir Charles Farr

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Charles Farr, head of the United Kingdom’s Joint Intelligence Committee.

Charles Farr was a steadfast, unsung counterterrorism ally while serving as the Director General of the United Kingdom’s Office for Security and Counter Terrorism, a position he held from 2007-2015. As the organization’s first head, Charles shaped a cohesive and thoughtful counterterrorism strategy and oversaw its implementation not only within the United Kingdom, but also in partnership with the United States. An intellectual force and brilliant strategist, Charles helped guide programs to combat violent extremism, facilitated U.S. partner engagements, and informed our collective assessment of the terrorist threat.

We at the National Counterterrorism Center are truly inspired by Charles’ courage. We will be forever grateful for the links that he built to sustain this most special counterterrorism relationship and strengthen the security of both our nations.
